THE last of the pre-OIF single unit constructed BSA 650 Thunderbolts.
This 1970 construction being rated as the best model with many improvements on the 1960’s models. Now running beautifully. Matching engine and frame numbers, built April 1970.
This bike is presented in near “concourse” standard: (“Excellent” - under the NADS/motorcycle “Restoration Class”).
It has undergone a ground-up restoration in 2 stages:
1) Previous owner: 2015-21 - Motor, gear box, clutch plates, brake linings, carburettor, tyres, reupholstered seat, and other incidental parts.
2) Current owner: 2022-2025 - strip down and re-painted with imported, ‘factory standard,’ Candy Red and all decals and gloss black frame members:
Most chromed parts replaced with new units, along with most nuts & bolts, most in s/steel: Only mufflers and mudguards remain. Unit casing restored/cleaned, cylinder barrel sanded and resprayed:
Oil pump replaced with ‘high-flow’ oil pump, and compatible oil release valve from SRM P/L (UK), - to overcome the “death rattles” associated with the BSA 650 twins:
New points plus Lucas electrical harness/loom, and ammeter.
Electrics checked, lubricants added, timing reset, motor tuned, road tested, QLD “Safety Certificate” obtained 19/11/25, and bike registered with ’club plates’ 21/11/25.
- It has only travelled 30 miles since the stage 1 restoration was completed.
